Do What’s in Front of You to Do

“Be Faithful, do what is in front of you to do. Step over nothing, go around nothing.”

The Holy Spirit to Helder.

Passerby asks, “Father, how shall I know what our Lovely Lady, the Holy Spirit, is asking me to do?”

Helder replies, “I, like you, had many gifts to offer and such great plans as a young ‘believer,’ and I was confident that I would be a great asset to the project of saving the whole world from the wrath of God. One day, when I was feeling pretty good about myself, She said to me,

“Would you be happy being a single grain of sand among many on this beautiful beach I have created for our pleasure, or must you be the prettiest pebble on the beach to be satisfied?”

I couldn’t answer. I knew that there was only one right answer to this question, and to claim it as my own would make me a liar. I so much wanted to appear to be the humble one, but I knew that She was not to be fooled as I hoped others were. I felt the warmth of Her smile; She loved me.

She is not asking you to be great. No one’s hero. And you don’t need to go looking for impressive ministry. She will not be impressed, and if anyone else is, you will be in danger of vanity. Your humility will be at risk. Fr Richard prays for one humiliation a day. A good example. Trust and be faithful to do what is in front of you to do.
